The Aware & Prepare Initiative: A Community Partnership to Strengthen Emergency & Disaster Readiness is now the leading public education campaign and outreach effort for the Operational Area in coordination with the Santa Barbara County Emergency Managers Committee (EMC) and Operational Area Council (OAC).
Aware & Prepare has focused its efforts exclusively within the Santa Barbara County Operational Area, which includes eight incorporated jurisdictions (Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Lompoc, Solvang, Buellton, Santa Maria and Guadalupe) as well as the unincorporated areas and special districts.
The Aware & Prepare Initiative is a public-private partnership to enhance the capabilities of non-profit organizations and government agencies to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters within the Santa Barbara County Operational Area.
Since its inception, Aware & Prepare has achieved significant milestones in improving Santa Barbara County’s disaster preparedness. The Aware & Prepare Initiative has provided the financial support and technical expertise to re-build the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) programs along with enhancing the plans, policies and procedures and addressing the appropriate equipment needs of key non-profit organizations and government agencies in Santa Barbara County. Furthermore, the initiative supported and successfully piloted Listos, a community-based training program empowering our Latino populations to become leaders in helping themselves, their families, and neighbors to prepare for and respond to emergencies.
